The tournament’s surprise package Julius Tverijonas has stormed the finals of the on-going 2019 ITF World Tennis Pro Circuit 2 in Kampala, Uganda.
Tverijonas who battled right from the qualifiers to enter the main draw defeated Ireland’s Simon Carr 7-5, 7-5 in one of the semi final games played at the Lugogo Tennis Club on Saturday.
The 25-year old Tverijonas took a 2-0 lead before Carr fought back to lead 5-2 in the first set. But the Lithuania player showed lots of composure and good game reading to fight back and win 7-5 before he also won the second set.
“This is a dream come true because it has been hard work right from the qualifiers to get to the final,” Tverijonas, ranked 1103 as per the ATP men’s singles rankings.
He will however face stiff challenge on Sunday in the final against Russia’s Ivan Nedelko who saw off Burundi’s Guy Orly Iradukunda 6-1, 6-2 in the second semi final match.
Nedelko ranked 440 by the ATP also on the men’s singles in the Circuit 1 last Sunday.
Simon Carr who lost in the men’s singles in the Circuit 1 last Sunday later paired with Ryan James Storrie (England) to beat Aryan Goveas (India) and Giovanni Samaha (Lebanon) 4-6, 6-3 (10-6) in the second men’s doubles semi final. They will face the Indian pair of Anirudh Chandrasekar and Niki Kaliyanda Poonacha in the final on Sunday.
