By Fred Okech
The Swallows of Burundi will face Uganda Cranes in the first round of the 2020 Total Africa Cup of Nations (CHAN).
Two second half goals by Iddy Muselemu and Olivier Dusabe were enough to give Burundi a 2-1 win over hosts South Sudan in the return leg of the first round match played at the StareTimes Stadium in Kampala on Sunday.
South Sudan who were using the StarTimes Stadium because Juba Stadium is under renovation took an early lead through Jose Kutch Nyuar.
But The Swallows who won the first leg 2-0 returned charged and attacked in numbers to score two goals. Burundi will now face Uganda in the final round of the qualifiers with the first leg to be played in Bujumbura between September 20-22.
“I am happy to score one of the goals that has helped the team qualify for the next stage. But we must prepare well before the Uganda game,” Dusabe told Mirrorsportafrica.
In the other games played in the Council for east and central African Football Associations (CECAFA) region, Tanzania beat hosts Kenya 4-1 in penalties after a barren draw, while Ethiopia also struggled to beat Djibouti 4-3 to qualify on a 5-3 goal aggregate.
The final round will now see Burundi face Uganda, while Ethiopia take on Rwanda and Tanzania battle Sudan.
The CHAN tournament is played by locally based players playing in the domestic leagues of the respective countries. Cameroon will host the 2020 CHAN tournament.
