Uganda’s 2012 Olympic gold medalist Stephen Kiprotich and three time Commonwealth Games gold medalist Joshua Cheptegei will lead Uganda’s team at the IAAF World Athletics Championship slated for September 27th to October 6th in Doha, Qatar.
Dominic Otuchet, President of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) told mirrorsportafrica.com on Monday that the two stars Kiprotich and Cheptegei have both qualified for the Championship. “Twenty seven athletes have hit the qualifying marks, but we can only take 21 at the moment because we only have three slots for marathon,” said Otuchet.
Kiprotich broke Uganda’s 30- year old Olympic gold jinx at the 2012 London Olympics when he won gold in marathon. Out of the three marathoners with best times this year Kiprotich is placed second behind Fred Musobo in the qualifying times, while Solomon Mutai is third.
Musobo who has showed great form this season has a qualifying time of 2:06.56, while Kiprotich has 2:07.57 and Mutai 2:09.05. Robert Chemonges who is forth placed will be placed on stand-by in-case any of the top three get injured or pulls out.
“We expect a good show by the marathoners because they have had a good season. But we also expect a good show from the other athletes like Cheptegei who has showed great form this season and won gold at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships,” added Otuchet.
Besides Kiprotich and Cheptegei, the other top Ugandan athletes who have qualified for the World Championships include; Jacob Kiplimo, Stephen Kissa, Ronald Musagala, Stella Chesang, Juliet Chekwel, Peruth Chemutai and Winnie Nanyondo.
The 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships, the seventeenth edition of the IAAF World Athletics Championships to be held at the renovated multi-purpose Khalifa International Stadium will bring together the top world athletes.
